Off the coast of Chile, a team led by Dr. Ana García Cegarra from Universidad de Antofagasta is uncovering the secrets of a little-known orca population in the Humboldt Current. Using citizen science and dedicated surveillance, they observed these orcas hunting dusky dolphins for the first time and sharing the prey among the pod. This discovery aids in understanding the orcas’ role in the marine ecosystem and their connections to other southern hemisphere populations, promoting conservation efforts. The study combines surveys, citizen data, and drone footage to map orca presence and behavior, revealing new insights into their diet and ecological relationships.
