On October 1, the Sun released a powerful X7.1 solar flare and coronal mass ejection (CME) aimed at Earth, marking one of the strongest flares in 30 years. While not dangerous, the NOAA predicts geomagnetic storms from October 3-5. These solar events, common during the Sun’s activity peak, originate from sunspots where magnetic fields snap, causing flares and CMEs. When CMEs reach Earth, they can trigger geomagnetic storms and auroras. The recent activity came from sunspot region AR 3842.
