Pesto, a 9-month-old king penguin at Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium, is the largest baby penguin they’ve ever seen, weighing nearly 50 pounds—more than his parents combined. Hatched on January 30, Pesto quickly gained weight, reaching 20 pounds by April and 49 pounds by September. His impressive size is attributed to his biological dad Blake, the aquarium’s largest penguin, and excellent foster parents Hudson and Tango. Pesto’s healthy appetite also contributes to his weight, which is expected to decrease when he develops adult feathers.
