Rogue asteroids pose a threat to Earth, as evidenced by the 2013 Chelyabinsk event. To prepare, NASA launched the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) in 2022, aiming to demonstrate asteroid deflection. DART successfully collided with Dimorphos, part of a binary system with Didymos, creating a large crater and significantly altering its trajectory. This mission provided valuable insights into asteroid behavior. Derek Richardson from the University of Maryland noted that while predictions were mostly accurate, unexpected findings have enhanced understanding of asteroid formation and evolution. One surprise was the extent of DART’s impact on Dimorphos.
