Russia has agreed to discharge Indian nationals misled into joining its army to fight in Ukraine, following Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s discussions with President Vladimir Putin. India has been pushing for their release for months, with continuous contact between the Indian Ministry of External Affairs and Russian authorities. Many foreign men, including South Asians, have been recruited by Russia with promises of steady employment and higher salaries. India’s Central Bureau of Investigation recently uncovered human trafficking networks deceiving men into Russian military jobs.
