Scientists have discovered a new type of gamma-ray emission, “flickering gamma-ray flashes,” from storm clouds using NASA aircraft. These emissions last 50-200 milliseconds, bridging the gap between brief terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs) and longer gamma-ray glows. This finding enhances understanding of thunderstorms’ high-energy processes and their link to lightning. The discovery was made during NASA’s ALOFT campaign using the ER-2 High-Altitude Aircraft, providing crucial insights into storm cloud behavior and radiation production.
