Scientists studying Antarctica’s Thwaites Glacier, known as the “Doomsday Glacier,” have found it is melting rapidly and may be on an irreversible path to collapse, potentially causing catastrophic global sea level rise. Their six-year research indicates that ice loss from Thwaites is accelerating and could lead to a sea level rise of around 10 feet, threatening coastal cities worldwide. The glacier’s retreat has sped up significantly over the last 30 years, and its collapse could occur within the next 200 years. The land beneath Thwaites slopes downward, exposing more ice to warmer ocean water, exacerbating the melt.
