The BepiColombo spacecraft, a joint ESA/JAXA mission, is conducting flybys of Mercury to prepare for its 2026 orbital mission. These flybys are crucial for understanding Mercury’s weak magnetic field, which, despite being similar to Earth’s, is much weaker and more affected by the solar wind due to Mercury’s proximity to the sun. During a June 2023 flyby, BepiColombo’s instruments, including the Mercury Plasma Particle Experiment, gathered data on Mercury’s magnetic field and particle interactions, offering insights into the planet’s magnetic environment.
