The European Space Agency (ESA) plans to launch the DRACO satellite in 2027 to study its disintegration during reentry. Developed by Deimos, DRACO will collect data on how satellites break up to improve future designs and assess environmental impacts. The 440-pound spacecraft will include a capsule that survives reentry to transmit data from its cameras and sensors. This mission supports ESA’s Zero Debris charter, aiming to eliminate space debris creation by 2030. Holger Krag, ESA’s head of space safety, emphasizes the importance of this data for developing more demisable satellites.
