The Juneau icefield in Alaska, containing over 1,000 glaciers, is melting 4.6 times faster than in the 1980s, a new study reveals. Researchers tracked snow levels since 1948, with data extending to the 18th century, noting an accelerated melt rate over the past decade. Shorter winters and longer summers are contributing to increased melt, with ice flow now averaging 50,000 gallons per second. From 2000 to 2020, Alaska experienced the highest glacier shrinkage globally.
