The SAGA Survey, initiated in 2013, studies galaxy systems similar to the Milky Way to determine its uniqueness. Recently, three new research articles were published, revealing insights from a census of 101 satellite systems. These smaller galaxies orbit larger host galaxies like the Milky Way, which has several satellites, including the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. The survey, co-led by Yao-Yuan Mao, Marla Geha, and Risa Wechsler, identified 378 satellite galaxies across these systems, with the number of satellites per system ranging from zero to 13, compared to the Milky Way’s four.
