The Thwaites Glacier, also known as the “Doomsday Glacier,” is deteriorating faster than expected, potentially causing significant sea level rise that could impact hundreds of millions in coastal areas. Research by the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration indicates that the glacier’s collapse could contribute up to 65 centimeters (26 inches) to sea levels, with a total rise closer to three meters when accounting for surrounding ice. The glacier’s ice shelf, which currently blocks ice flow into the sea, is nearing breakup, likely within two to three years, accelerating the melting process.
