The world’s oceans are nearing dangerous levels of acidity, threatening marine life and climate stability, according to a report by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). The report identifies nine crucial factors for sustaining life, with six already exceeding safe limits due to human activity. Ocean acidification, driven by CO2 emissions from fossil fuels, is set to become the seventh breached threshold. Acidic waters harm marine species and disrupt food supplies, while also reducing the oceans’ ability to absorb CO2. The only safe boundary remaining is the planet’s protective ozone layer.
