Ukraine, facing manpower shortages and uneven international aid, is leveraging innovation in secret workshops to create a robot army aimed at countering Russian forces. Around 250 defense startups are producing unmanned vehicles, like the Odyssey, which costs $35,000—10% of an imported model’s price. These workshops, resembling rural car repair shops, are equipped for welding, body work, and fitting basic electronics. The military is evaluating various unmanned vehicles from this sector. In May, Ukraine added a fourth military branch, the Unmanned Systems Forces.
