The victim, Maria Diana, was killed while hiking, prompting an emergency parliamentary session and a moment of silence. Romania, home to 8,000 brown bears, has seen 26 fatalities and 274 severe injuries from bear attacks over the past 20 years.

The President’s memory lapses, such as confusing Ukrainian President Zelensky with Putin and Kamala Harris with Trump, turned the summit into a referendum on Biden’s age. This raised concerns about a potential Nato-sceptic Trump administration. In response, hawkish member states like Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania tailored their messages to appeal to Republicans, using analogies like golf club rules to emphasize the importance of respecting Nato commitments.

Ukrainian startups are developing a low-cost robot army to combat Russia, leveraging innovation in secret workshops due to manpower shortages and uneven international aid. Around 250 defense startups are creating unmanned vehicles, like the Odyssey, which costs $35,000—10% of an imported model’s price. These workshops, resembling rural car repair shops, produce various unmanned air, ground, and marine vehicles. A new military branch, the Unmanned Systems Forces, was established in May to integrate these technologies into Ukraine’s defense strategy.

In Mombasa, Kenya, Peter Nyongesa combats illegal mangrove logging by placing hidden beehives in the forests. Despite his pleas to loggers to spare young mangroves, they often ignored him, claiming the trees belonged to God. Now, the threat of bee stings deters loggers, protecting the mangroves, which are crucial for preventing erosion and mitigating severe weather impacts. This initiative is part of a local conservation effort, addressing threats like illegal logging, climate change, and urban development, as over half of the world’s mangrove ecosystems face collapse.

Ukraine, facing manpower shortages and uneven international aid, is leveraging innovation in secret workshops to create a robot army aimed at countering Russian forces. Around 250 defense startups are producing unmanned vehicles, like the Odyssey, which costs $35,000—10% of an imported model’s price. These workshops, resembling rural car repair shops, are equipped for welding, body work, and fitting basic electronics. The military is evaluating various unmanned vehicles from this sector. In May, Ukraine added a fourth military branch, the Unmanned Systems Forces.

Peter Nyongesa, a 69-year-old in Mombasa, Kenya, uses beehives to deter loggers from cutting down mangroves along the Indian Ocean coastline. Despite his pleas to spare or selectively cut the trees, loggers ignored him, claiming the trees belong to God. Nyongesa’s beehives are part of a local conservation effort to protect mangroves, which prevent erosion and mitigate severe weather impacts. Mangroves face threats from illegal logging, climate change, pollution, and urban development, with over half of the world’s mangrove ecosystems at risk of collapse, according to a global assessment.
